Quote of the Week: Finding an Inspiration

“Addiction is hard to overcome. As you might remember, I drank too much at one time in my life. I understand that sometimes you can find the inspiration from a higher power to solve an addiction problem.”

George W. Bush
President of the United States

Note: President Bush, speaking about his battles with substance abuse at the Jericho program in Baltimore. Bush, who as a young man was arrested for driving under the influence, gave up alcohol at age 40 and became increasingly involved in his church in Texas.

A Piece of Curiosity on RATS and STAR

Some years ago, I have read about a business news in Philippine. As you see the name ‘Business News,’ please don’t think about companies, stocks, shares, banks, conglomerates, etc. It was just about selling rats in some local markets of Philippine.

The interesting thing in the rat market was the rat sellers’ persuasion or making the name ‘rats’ to be interested in. How did the rat sellers create the name ‘rats’ to get peoples’ attention, do you know? They yelled 'STAR! STAR! STAR!' They wrote ‘STAR’ on the papers of advertisement because when you read each letter of ‘RATS’ back to front, from ‘S’ to ‘R’; you will find ‘STAR.’ I will show you to be more obvious as below:

R A T S
S T A R

Then, I am also thinking about the humans’ recalling on memory. We recall our memories by several ways - oppositely, differently, similarly, especially when we had two things matched. For example, when you see the word ‘war,’ by the most part, you will match in your memory with the word ‘peace.’ When you see the name ‘Romeo,’ your memory will definitely make the automatic recalling of ‘Juliet.’ When you see the word ‘black,’ you will match with the word ‘white.’ What I mean here is about the ways that people usually recall their memory about the two things, which are matched by any way. Every normal person has this experience enough in daily life. Right?

Alright, I would like you to participate in this scenario by yourself. Let us say that you were in that market where rats were being sold, on those days and you ate the rats there.
My curiosity here is – next time or a decade or many years later, when you see RATS, do you think that your memory at once will recall the STAR?
Or, do you think that when you see STAR, your memory will remind you about RATS?
Which way will be mostly based on; rats to star, or star to rats?

Laughs and Smiles

Laughs

Today, I am reading my notebook, which I have had since I was a university student in Burma. I found ten kinds of laugh. I took this note from a book but I don’t remember from which book it was. I am sorry.

The ten kinds of laugh that I found in my notebook and I would like to share with you are:
1) An old miser’s chuckle (or) A quiet laugh
2) A giggling school-girls’ laugh
3) A gloating laugh
4) An embraceable laugh
5) A simmering laugh
6) A heart laugh
7) A polite laugh
8) A weak-minded person’s laugh
9) A cynical laugh
10) A scale-ascending laugh

Smiles

In capitalcitysmiles site, there are three main types of smiles:
1) The Commissure Smile
2) The Cuspid Smile
3) The Complex Smile

Anyway, what is difference between laugh and smile?

Fundamentally, I think the big different thing is ‘voice’ or ‘making sound’ between laugh and smile. Roughly, a smile does not have voice but a laugh has. The other different matter between laugh and smile is – people can more feign when they smile than when they laugh.

I have read in a religious story that ‘however an animal is cunning, you can find it much easier than the meaning of a man (a human being)’s dishonest smile.’

What do you think?

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr: I have a Dream!

Today is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day.

Here are excerpts from his the most famous speech; I have a Dream:

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

“Times Are Stolen!”

Yesterday, I went to our Leadership Retreat Students’ Reunion, which was called “Game Night.” The event was from 5 to 8ish PM. Coincidentally, my wife also had their High School Students’ Reunion and their time was 7 to 10:30 PM. Since we have three children, we had to poorly split our time.

I went to my reunion at about 5:15 and came back home at about 6:45. I saw my friends; some students were just coming in to the event while I was saying “goodbye.” The “fun time” was just begun.

After we had food, my friends were going to start playing pool tournament, ping pong and singing Karaoke, etc. I miss my friends. I wanted to stay longer with them. They wanted me to be with them there, too. That was also rare opportunity to meet with them again. What could I do? I just had to leave.

We have ‘Past’ ‘Present’ and ‘Future.’ We have received experiences, regrets and lessons from the past. ‘Past’ is gone, already. The future is not with us, yet. Only ‘present’ is real one that we exactly own and which we are living. However, I felt yesterday that before the ‘present was not real present yet,’ the future was incredibly running and hitting into the present with high-speed. The present was not even really in its place yet; the future was coming to take over its place.

Like me, many people could have the same feeling and experience in this era.
Are we losing our present for the future?
In other words, “Our Present is Stolen!”
What do you think?

Three Notes of QandAs With Madeleine Albright

Q: What was your greatest accomplishment as Secretary?
Lester Palencia Ordan
Santa Cruz, Philippines
A: I was able to be part of a decision that saved a lot of lives in Kosovo. Afterward, I went to the capital, Pristina, and saw crowds of people with signs that said THANK YOU, USA. I am now thrilled that there is a generation of girls in Kosovo whose first name is Madeleine.

Q: Should the Constitution be amended to allow foreign-born Americans to run for President?
Maggie Devcich, Los Angeles

A: I have never thought about it for myself, but I do think that many foreign-born Americans could be President. There should be a requirement that instead someone has to be raised in the U.S. for 25 years or something. For me, being raised in a free America made all the difference.

Q: What advice do you have for women who want respect from their male colleagues?
Dana Philbin, Chicago

A: Women have to be active listeners and interrupters-but when you interrupt, you have to know what you are talking about. I also think it is important for women to help one another. I have a saying: There is a special place in hell for women who don’t.

Note: Madeleine Albright was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia (current Czech Republic) in 1937 and moved to the United States from London, England in 1948. She was the first woman Secretary of State in the U.S. history. Her term was 1997 to 2001 under the President Bill Clinton’s administration.

Candidate of the Presidential Bid

In a race, not only it is important to knowing to gain a victory or to appropriately lose, but also sometimes, it is more important to have enough knowledge that how to make a strategic withdrawal.

If you want to know what does ‘politician’ mean, you should ask Bill Richardson. He knows the broader definition of ‘politician’ than many other people.

Bill Richardson was a congressman, a diplomat, an ambassador, secretary of the department of energy and currently, he is the governor of New Mexico where the highest percentage of Hispanic Americans and the second highest percentage of Native Americans are living.

Here are excerpts from his withdrawal - ‘Thank You’ speech:

“Running for president brings out the best in everyone who graces the stage, and I have learned much from the other candidates running. They have all brought great talents and abilities to the campaign.”

“And all I ask of the candidates is that they do not resort to personal attacks to win the nomination. Our country and our party deserve better than that. I have said from the beginning that we must avoid attacking each other and I continue to believe that to this day.”

“I am an optimist. I am positive about this country and our ability to tackle the great challenges ahead. The last year, I have learned so much, but I have learned, most of all, that the people of this country are a sincere and caring people. They are also thoughtful and deadly serious about the choice before them as they consider these candidates. So, it is with an optimistic spirit that I withdraw my candidacy for the Presidency today. I believe in the American people and their wisdom to make the right choice in the weeks and months ahead.”
“Thank you. God Bless you and God bless America.”

He has accomplished at the forth place in New Hampshire’s primary vote. If he won the election, he could be the first Hispanic American president in the United States but he comfortably and dignifiedly set up his withdrawal from the campaign. Why did he do it?
There are four main characteristics in military - defensive, offensive, marching and withdrawal. Many military strategists accept that ‘successful withdrawal’ is the most artful, skillful and ingenious. Americans have learned about it enough from Vietnam and Iraq.

If I say, not only he knew when it is the most appropriate time to enter into the ring and when it is the most suitable time to quit, but he also demonstrated that how to play the high level games in certain phenomenon. He knows the energy, speed, momentum, acceleration and inertia of this most powerful race in the country.

He is clever. He is a real politician. He beautifully accomplished the hardest part by strategically.
He is Candidate of the Presidential Bid 2008!

Presidential Primary Campaigns: Such Beautiful Views in Democracy

In one of my articles, ‘Respect Difference: One of the Greatnesses in Democracy,’ I wrote about what I saw and felt during the presidential campaign between George W Bush and John Kerry in 2004. Now, I want to write about the beautiful views of presidential campaigns in this primary election of 2008.
Through this primary election, I become a C-SPAN fun. Besides, I also read and watch the news at BBC, CNN and Chicago Tribune. There are several speeches, hundreds of thousands of votes, many resulting numbers, winners, losers, smiles, tears and applauses.
All candidates must be exhausted. Supporters, campaigners, voters and reporters also must be tired. I have been just watching whenever I have / had the chance. Even I am tired. Despite I am tired, I am very happy and really enjoy. How beautiful views they are!
No matter whoever wins or loses, whether, which race or ethnicity, male or female, white or black or brown or yellow, young or old, it is such a lovely and beautiful. It is America. It is DEMOCRACY. It is value of human being. People fully have one of the greatest opportunities and rights of mankind, which is to choose their preferable leader by themselves.
I heartily respect this value and today I consider myself that I am one of the luckiest persons in the world to be here, in this great DEMOCRACTIC LAND.

Quote of the Week: Education is the Most Significant Investment to CHANGE

“If we make education pertinent, something the student enjoys, then it won’t matter if the classroom’s walls are straw or the students are sitting on fruit boxes.”

Oscar Becerra
Head of Educational Technology of Peru

Some (students) tell me that they don’t want to be like their parents, working in the fields.”

Erica Velasco
1st-grade teacher, Peru

Happy Bird Day

Today is Bird Day.

As the Christmas and Happy New Year presents, my wife and I bought things together this year. Among them, the bird feeder that you see in above photos is included. On December 25th, on the Christmas Day, we set it up on the tree, which is in front of our house.

I remember my early life in our village. When we were young, we threw the birds by the catapult and we burned the bird and ate it on the spot (as soon as we get the bird). How wild we were! Sometimes, we took the bird-eggs from the nests. Then, the eggs were stuffed with the clay and baked and we ate them. If I say openly, I felt the birds were beautiful but I was doing it with my friends, since everybody was doing the same thing. I just realize that how the power of community is hugely effective on someone’s life. We were doing those nasty things without knowing the value of environment, with ignorance of natural beauties, with inadequate consideration and knowledge of mankind.

As a Buddhist, I deeply believe the direct effect and consequences of our actions and efforts. If I do good things, the result will be fine, too. If I am doing nasty things, I deserve the same consequences, sooner or later. I destroyed the lives of birds. I separated the family members of birds. Now, I get exact result the same. I left my family 19 years ago. In November 2004, as soon as I get in the United States, I made a phone call to my family. I had the chance to talk with my mom on that day for the first time 16 years later I left. I said, “Mom, I did not hear your voice 16 years already.” Mom cried. I do not know when I will have the chance to see my mom, dad and family again. May be - never! Who knows? I miss them a lot. I am also thinking about the birds those were victims when I was a boy, also would be the same. I am very sorry.

Whatever it was in my childhood, now I am giving foods to birds in front of our house and I am appreciating with the views of birds’ eating and enjoying. Sometimes, I take the photos; the three pictures you see the above are included among them. Thanks.

Let everybody have the food in wish!

Happy Bird Day!
